📌 Why in News?
On 15 August 2026, the Government released a 12‑year performance review of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), marking the anniversary of its launch by the Prime Minister at the Red Fort in 2014. The data highlighted that more than 58.63 crore accounts have been opened, with deposits crossing ₹3.08 lakh crore, and underscored its role as the backbone of the JAM trinity and Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT). The review also flagged challenges such as account dormancy, under‑utilised overdraft facilities and last‑mile delivery gaps, prompting calls for a shift from mere access to active usage.
