HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
- Mangroves were historically treated as wastelands or sources of timber and fuel in many coastal planning systems, leading to conversion for aquaculture, ports, settlements and agriculture.
- The ecosystem-services framework broadened valuation by recognising provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural benefits that markets often omit.
- After major cyclones and the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the protective role of coastal vegetation received greater policy attention, although effectiveness varies with width, species, topography and storm conditions.
- Blue-carbon science highlighted that mangrove soils can store very large carbon stocks for long periods, making coastal wetlands relevant to climate mitigation as well as adaptation.
