The UN General Assembly backed a 'Correct the Map' initiative encouraging more accurate representation of continental area,
especially Africa.
The resolution was sponsored by Togo and supported by African Union members; 164 countries supported it, including India.
The traditional Mercator projection greatly enlarges high-latitude regions relative to equatorial regions.
Africa is about 14 times larger than Greenland, although Mercator maps can make them appear much closer in size.
The Equal Earth projection, developed in 2018, is an equal-area projection designed to show relative land areas more
accurately.
WHYINNEWS
The UN General Assembly voted on a non-binding resolution encouraging institutions to move away from distorted world maps that
misrepresent the relative size of Africa.
The debate is not about finding a perfectly distortion-free flat map - that is impossible - but about choosing a projection appropriate to the
purpose.
The issue links geography and mathematics with colonial history, education, political perception and international representation.
TOPDATA & FACTS
A map projection converts locations on the curved surface of the Earth onto a flat plane.
No flat world map can simultaneously preserve area, shape, distance and direction everywhere.
The Mercator projection was introduced by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569.
It is a cylindrical conformal projection that preserves local angles and shapes reasonably well, which historically made it useful for marine
navigation.
Its area distortion increases dramatically toward the poles.
As a result, Greenland, northern Canada, Russia and northern Europe appear disproportionately large.
Equatorial regions such as Africa, South America and parts of Asia appear smaller relative to high-latitude regions.

Africa's real area is roughly 30 million square kilometres, while Greenland is about 2.2 million square kilometres.
Thus Africa is around 14 times larger than Greenland.
The 2026UN vote supported the 'Correct the Map' campaign and encouraged use of projections that better represent relative area.
Akashvani reported support from 164 nations, including India, France and the United Kingdom.
The United States voted against the resolution and several countries abstained.
The resolution is non-binding; it does not legally prohibit Mercator maps.
The Equal Earth projection was created in 2018 as an equal-area world map with a visually balanced appearance.
Equal-area projections preserve proportional area but necessarily distort some shapes, angles or distances.
Map projections are mathematical transformations, not political statements by themselves; political consequences arise when one
projection is repeatedly used outside the purpose for which it was designed.
Mercator's conformal property is valuable because small shapes and bearings are locally preserved, explaining why simply calling the
projection 'wrong' is technically incomplete.
HISTORICALPERSPECTIVE
Early modern European navigation created demand for maps that allowed sailors to plot constant-bearing courses as straight lines.
Mercator's projection was highly effective for this navigational purpose, helping explain its long survival.
Over time, it became common in classrooms and wall maps even when navigation was not the task.
Critics argued that habitual use shaped mental perceptions of global size and importance, especially by shrinking equatorial regions.
Modern cartography increasingly teaches projection choice: a map should be selected according to what the user needs to compare.
ECONOMICPERSPECTIVE
Maps influence infrastructure planning, logistics, education, tourism and business communication.
Area distortion can mislead casual comparisons of land resources, markets or distances, although professional analysis normally uses
geospatial data rather than classroom wall maps.
Updating educational materials and digital platforms has a modest transition cost.
Open-source geospatial systems make it technically easy to offer multiple projections for different purposes.
Equal-area maps can improve statistical communication when comparing population density, land cover, forests or agricultural area.
Projection literacy reduces the economic cost of poor geographic interpretation.
Equal-area projections answer a different question: they make a square kilometre occupy the same proportional map area everywhere,
which is especially useful for comparing continents or thematic statistics.
Central-meridian choice also shapes perception because any world map must be cut somewhere; placing a region at the centre is a
design decision separate from projection mathematics.
GEOGRAPHICALPERSPECTIVE
The Earth's near-spherical surface cannot be flattened without distortion, a fundamental geometric constraint.
Mercator's scale increases with latitude, causing extreme polar enlargement.
Web mapping often uses Web Mercator because it works conveniently for tiled interactive maps, not because it accurately compares
continental area.
For thematic maps of deforestation, population density or biome extent, equal-area projections are often more appropriate.
Africa crosses the Equator and lies largely in low latitudes, so Mercator makes it look smaller relative to far-northern landmasses.
ENVIRONMENTALPERSPECTIVE
Projection choice matters in environmental communication because area is central to forest loss, habitat extent, ice cover and land-use
statistics.
An equal-area projection can visually represent the true proportional extent of biomes more faithfully.
Climate-risk maps may require specialised projections suited to the region rather than a single global default.
Polar studies often use polar stereographic projections despite their unsuitability for global area comparison.
Good cartography should disclose projection and scale where these affect interpretation.
Environmental education benefits when students understand that every map is a model with trade-offs.
SOCIALPERSPECTIVE
Maps shape geographic imagination from childhood and can influence perceptions of which regions are 'large', 'central' or peripheral.
Critics of Mercator's classroom dominance argue that distortion can reinforce Eurocentric mental maps.
Changing a projection does not by itself solve political or economic inequality, but it can improve representational accuracy.
Educational reform should teach multiple projections rather than simply replacing one unquestioned map with another.
Map literacy is increasingly important in an era of dashboards, election maps, conflict maps and social-media graphics.
Visual fairness requires explaining what a map preserves and what it distorts.
POLITICAL / GOVERNANCEPERSPECTIVE
The UN General Assembly resolution is politically influential but not legally binding on national governments.
Countries and institutions can choose map projections according to educational and technical needs.
International organisations should use equal-area maps when relative territorial size is the main message.
Navigation, cadastral work, aviation and local engineering may legitimately require different projections.
India's support is consistent with calls for more representative global institutions and greater attention to Global South perspectives.
Policy should focus on cartographic literacy and fit-for-purpose mapping rather than banning a technically useful projection.
Digital globes reduce some projection problems by allowing users to view a three-dimensional Earth, although flat screens and printed
products will continue to require projection choices.
Cartograms intentionally distort geographic area according to variables such as population or GDP; they demonstrate that distortion can
be informative when the map clearly states what it represents.
PROS
Improves visual comparison of continental area.
Corrects a common public misconception about Africa's size.
Promotes cartographic literacy.
Supports more appropriate thematic mapping.
Highlights Global South representation.
Encourages institutions to explain projection choices.
CONS
No projection can remove every distortion.
Mercator remains useful for specific navigational purposes.
A symbolic map change does not address material inequality.
Users may wrongly assume equal-area maps preserve shape or distance.
Digital systems may retain Web Mercator for technical convenience.
Political framing can obscure the underlying mathematical trade-offs.
ACTIONABLEROADMAP
Use equal-area projections for global area comparisons and thematic statistics.
Teach why Mercator was created and where it remains useful.
Display projection names in educational and analytical maps.
Train students to compare area, shape, direction and distance trade-offs.
Allow digital platforms to switch projections where feasible.
Avoid treating any single flat world map as perfectly accurate.
Use globe-based or 3D tools when distortion itself is the teaching point.
Connect cartographic reform with broader geographic literacy rather than symbolism alone.
School geography should teach students to read legends, scale, projection, north orientation and data source together, turning the
controversy into a lesson in critical visual literacy.
The UN initiative's lasting value will depend less on replacing one poster map and more on whether institutions become explicit about why
a particular projection is appropriate for a particular task.
